Hello! I’m Sal Barbera, artist, author and illustrator of the children’s book series: A Sweetles Dream®.
I love to draw, especially on my iPad using an app called Procreate. I draw at home, or when I go somewhere like gardens, museums, parks…it’s fun!
Besides loving to cook (and sing) and make people laugh, I write stories that tackle difficult subjects with humor.
Humor is serious business. Sure, there’s simple comedy, like a pie in the face, but a lot of jokes use intelligent humor, and despite much reflection and experimentation—both in labs and on stages—no one has yet discovered a unified theory of hilarity. Which is just fine by me, because it works. I inject humor to give kids ideas on how to deal with tough situations using diplomacy, kindness and a sense of fun.
Ernie The Dysfunctional Frog is about the difficulties of ‘fitting in’- which adopted children and foster kids understand all too well. It shows the importance of friendship and family and how challenging it is for some to ‘fit in’ with their peers in looks, abilities and skills.

“A Sweetles Dream“® books series was created on the premise that Sweetles®, a little dog character, named after my own dog Max, sees something during the day that he needs to figure out. When he sleeps, he dreams up a solution to the situation he saw or encountered during the day.
